The Good Dinosaur wasn’t the biggest dinosaur movie of 2015, but Pixar’s tale of friendship between an evolved talking dinosaur and a feral orphan boy is poised to connect on home video after being overshadowed by the year-end Star Wars machine. The animated adventure will arrive on disc, Digital HD, and Disney Movies Anywhere on Feb. 23.

“At Pixar, we would always ask these what-if questions,” director Peter Sohn said before the film opened in Novermber. “What if toys came alive when you weren’t around? What if monsters really did live in your closets? And what if a rat could cook in a world famous French restaurant. And with Dino, we wanted to ask a huge what-if?”

What if the asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs had missed the planet completely? And what if dinosaurs then survived long enough to learn how to master their environment, even as primitive humans appeared and shared their world? In the film, a timid apatosaurus named Arlo gets lost, and his unlikely friend in the wild becomes Spot, a tenacious critter who’s somehow managed to survive as long as he has all by himself.

This exclusive short, Hide and Seek, documents their friendship. Spot is like Arlo’s pet, hence the game of fetch. But Spot has the essential survival skills that Arlo lacks.

The Good Dinosaur did not deliver the box office that Pixar expects from its hits, but it’s a gorgeous film to watch. “We’re really trying to push animation to a place that we haven’t seen before,” said Sohn. “We wanted to make nature both beautiful and dangerous at the same time, trying to find a world that can make even a dinosaur feel tiny.”

It would be a slight irony — but no surprise — if such lush visuals eventually connect with a huge audience on TV screens and tablets.
