Wynton Marsalis at 60: a retrospective playlist

At home in many genres, Wynton Marsalis is a legend in the field of jazz, with a Pulitzer Prize, a Peabody Award, nine Grammy Awards — among countless other honors — to his credit.

Artistic director of the New York City-based Jazz at Lincoln Center, he and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra return for their annual residency at Symphony Center, with two concerts on Feb. 25 and Feb. 26. The first, “Wynton @ 60,” celebrates Marsalis' recent birthday, with a retrospective focus on his storied career. The second, titled “Freedom, Justice and Hope,” features familiar and newly commissioned works that pay tribute to important moments and figures in Black history. Equal Justice Initiative founder and executive director Bryan Stevenson serves as a special guest performer and narrator in a program that addresses timely issues of racial equity and social justice.
