P: Document window turns grey/black Photoshop 23.0.2 with Mac OS Monterrey

Hi,

I've just updating Photoshop versión to 23.0.2 and the Mac Os to Monterey. I've an issue with the cropping image tool. When i choose it, the image become all grey, without the any posibility to use it. The issue disapear if i choose any other tool.

How can i resolve it ?

Since the update yesterday i have big problems. The files i want to open wouldn't correctly open. I can see the layers are there but the screen is just grey and nothing appears. Same thing if i want to creat a new blank document (CRAZY). I can't figure out where it comes from. Even tried to downgrade to older versions but nothing would do. Please help. I'm stuck and can't work !

@Pacer22048574pn0y , I see this document contains 3D layers. That workaround will be necessary for the time being, but also note that Photoshop's 3D features will be coming out of the program starting very soon, so editing with 3D will only be possible with previous versions of Photoshop. We recently made a change to the Creative Cloud application to make sure that those older versions remain available to you, and you can install and use multiple versions of Photoshop on the same system (just not used at the same time).

anytime i try to add a picture to photshop the background is either black or gray and i can't see my picture. How do I add my picture from my files?

Are you meaning that when you open an image [such as tiff or jpeg] using Photoshop that the entire image is now black?

Have you popened this specific image using any other application? Just to check it isn't actaully "black"?

Or you are placing an image into an existing photoshop document (file)?
Please explain further. Give us your process step by step.

Hello,

I am on MacOs Monterey 12.1 and photoshop 2022 (last updates), I also had this problem with Catalina.

With some images (not all), when I open it I have a black screen.

• when I uncheck "use graphic processor" > the image appears but photoshop is slow and I can't do anything with layers etc.

• when I uncheck "Use OpenCL" > no black screen but no image, just the dark grey background of photoshop

I also deleted the preference file.

Could you help me please?

Hi, could you find a common denominator in those files? 3D layer? smart object? a given size/number of layers?Edited or not in a previous version?

Try also to have only Ps running.

thank you for your answer.

One is a .psd with layers and smart object (it's a mockup) and the other is just a simple .png file so I woudn't say if there is a common denominator. I have other .psd files that work perfectly and so far no problem with JPG files.

I tried with only Ps running but it doesn't change anything.

If the smart object contains a 3D object, we know that 3D rendering isn't working; the workaround for now has been to check the 'Deactivate Native Canvas' button in Preferences > Tech Previews (must restart Photoshop); give that a try to see if the image pops back to life.

My second guess is to turn off 'Precise Color Management for HDR Display' in Preferences > Tech Previews, in case it's enabled.

And if those things aren't working, please include your Photoshop > System Info data; if you have multiple monitors, let us know, too.

there is no 3D objectf in my the psd and the "Precise Color Management for HDR Display" is not enabled.

Also after opening it, if I open other files (that I can normally see and work with) I have a black screen, I have to turn off and on photoshop.

Hi, I am having the same problem with latest update to Photoshop 2022 (V. 23.1) When I open certain files, (no 3D layers, but smart objects) the screen is just dark grey. I can see the layers, but nothing else. I did uncheck "Use graphics processor" restart and I could open the file normally. However, I use the features supported by that so I decided to uninstall and go back to 2021. I am using a late 2013 iMac running OS 10.15.7 with 3.5 quad core i7, 32 GB 1600MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB.

Would 'Deactivate Native Canvas' in Preferences >Tech Previews or 'Precise Color Management for HDR Display' (I'm pretty sure this display isn't HDR, so souldn't be on) Would these work-arounds work do you think?

Wouldn't hurt to try. Turn the GPU back on, then tick each of the suggestions that Mark suggests one at a time and restart between each one and see if the problem goes away. That will help us narrow down.

10.15.7 has known issues with GPU functionality; if possible, upgrade to Big Sur or later, or at least run ALL of the security patches for 10.15.7 (I think there were 3 of them).

Hi Mark,

I unstall and install photoshop 23.0.0 now my .png works! But the .psd still doesn't appear.

Do you have multiple displays on your system? If you get a chance, please send along your Photoshop > Help > System Info details; maybe there is a hint in there. If you can share the file with me, please send via email (using the built in email feature).

Hi Mark, I have run all the updates and unfortunately this machine cannot be updated to big sur. Here is the system info, I have reinstalled Photoshop (22.5.4) for the moment, so the system info comes from there. If I need to reinstall 23.1 I can try that.

Hello All,

I am a professional photographer and have a serious issue that prevents me from working. This week Monterey upgraded to 12.1. A day later, Creative Cloud upgraded all my apps. Photoshop is now at 23.1.0.

When I open a photo in Photoshop, it loads but appears black. Only when I make a copy of the background, the image will show. It seems that this effect is related to the graphics process. (MBP 15" 2018, 2.9 GHz 6-core Intel Core i9, 32GB 2400 DDR4, Radeon Pro Vega 20 4 GB)
I have projects for which I have deadlines today (Friday, Dec. 17) for which I need to use the timeline. I have to disable the GPU acceleration to get anything done. But now the timeline only runs as 4-5 fps instead of the 30 fps before the upgrades, even switching back to graphics processor acceleration the speed does not change.

The same is true for InDesign. I have presentations to make and cannot get InDesign to respond when I load my project file. Beachball is running continuously now. Three days ago, before the updates, all was running fine.

This is seriously affecting my work and I need a solution in the next few hours.

Can anyone help?

If you go under the Apple menu, and select "About this Mac", what does it say about the system? Trying to determine what model you are using.

I've seen previous threads on this topic - but those fixes don't work for me.

Blank screen on certain files - when I go on channels I see there is information there, the layers open too...but nothing shows up. It seems to only be happening with files that have 3D layers, but maybe that's a coincidence? I know that Photoshop decided to discontinue 3D support? I just want to open these mockup files!

This error was happening on Photoshop 2021 and now I updated to 2022 and it's still happening.
