JUBA – Board of Trustees of National Conversation South Sudan has rejected the call for regime change through a protest called by the People’s Coalition for Civil Action.

They said although peaceful protest is the right for the groups or individuals, the citizens should first understand the level of political awareness or socio-economic development of the country so that they can carry out the peaceful protest.

In a statement shared with the media, the organization described the protest as “not the correct action for consideration” based on the objectives and realities of the country.

They argued that the country is currently being run by a unity government composed of conflicting political parties and ideologies with the intent to rule the same country.

“The National Conservation South Sudan is concerned that the scrupulous power elite with a vested interest may take the advantage of this opportunity to capture the State,” the statement read in part. “This can only hurt an already precarious situation in our nascent Republic.”

2018 peace deal paramount

Bol Joseph Agau, the Chief Executive Officer of National Conservation South Sudan, said the matrix of implementation of the peace agreement is about to elapse and warned that without any recommitment and extension negotiation; and with lack of political awareness, civil action is a disaster.

“The National Conservation South Sudan will not promote violence for other people’s children to die because we believe the real uprising is one of the consciousness and that can only be achieved through political education,” Bol said.

He said the organization had learned the harsh economic situation in the country and any poorly planned action could likely motivate a peaceful demonstrator to turn to the loot of properties.

He appealed to the citizens not to serve what they called a “vested interest.”

“It is ill-advised to advocate for a regime change that would not be sustainable due to lack of indigenous participation and lack of political awareness of the civil population of South Sudan,” Bol stressed.

On Wednesday, August 18, 2021, Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony of Central Equatoria State warned residents in Juba not to take part in a regime-change planned demonstration by the so-called Coalition for Civil Action.

He urged the public to disassociate themselves with such a group that intends to promote violence in the country.

In an emergency meeting held with the State Unions including Chamber of Commerce, Workers Trade, Women, Youth, and Boda-Boda Unions, Mr. Adil urged the unions to dissociate themselves from any call for protest against the ongoing implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement.

Over the past weeks, there has been social media information with an alleged group of influential South Sudanese mobilizing for massive demonstrations across the country.

The group is said to have planned to go to the streets at the end of the month to pressure parties to fully implement the revitalized peace agreement or force the current regime to resign.

However, the unions of the government of Central Equatoria State condemned the move and called on the public not to join the group.
