CASC @ SC23 Highlights

First of all, we would like to express our gratitude to all the members who joined us for the CASC luncheon, visited our inaugural booth at the SC23 conference, and actively contributed to the SC23 Inclusivity BoF, titled “Fostering Inclusivity in Research Computing and Data: Case Studies, Best Practices, and Scaling Strategies.” Here are some noteworthy highlights:

  1. CASC Luncheon at SC23: Katie Antypas, the newly appointed director of the NSF Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure, delivered a comprehensive update to the CASC membership. She touched upon crucial topics such as the Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI)  and the launch of the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) through a Coordinated Pilot, among others.

2. Inaugural CASC Booth at SC23: CASC marked its first presence as an exhibitor at the SC conference. We engaged with numerous visitors interested in learning more about CASC membership, and fruitful discussions about potential sponsorship opportunities with industry members took place.

  1. Unveiling of the 2024 CASC Brochure: We proudly unveiled our latest 2024 CASC brochures, distributing them to members at their booths and sharing them during the CASC luncheon. An electronic version is accessible at this link, and additional copies can be requested by contacting Carolyn Casler at casler@casc.org.
  • 4. SC23 Inclusivity BoF: The Inclusivity BoF participants offered up best practices to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in research computing and data. The audience ranked CASC Research Ecosystem Inclusivity workgroup recommendations, with two priorities emerging as nearly equal in ranking: serving as an information clearinghouse to promote existing opportunities and collaborations, and leveraging CASC’s stature as a trusted adviser to federal agencies to shape policies.. Further insights into the challenges and potential solutions that were addressed can be found in an HPCwire article written by AJ Lauer of Thriving Ibis: Link.

5. Collaborative Discussions with CaRCC Leadership: CASC had productive meetings with CaRCC leadership to explore synergies between the organizations. Discussions included sharing best practices on membership and corporate sponsorship models, aligning with the ongoing efforts of the CaRCC Finance and Membership Model Exploratory Group, which is actively investigating these options.

As we look ahead to 2024, we eagerly welcome your comments and suggestions as we continue to build upon CASC strategic priorities.

Warm regards,
Kathryn Kelley, CASC Executive Director
On behalf of the CASC Executive Committee
