Video Game: To the Moon
One Autistic's Review of "To the Moon"
Submitted by Danneq:
I have a lot of mixed feelings about To the Moon. Most of these stem from the fact that I am on the autism spectrum. I don't think I've ever seen an autistic character portrayed in a video game before. (Probably I have, they're just not coming to me at the moment.) There are two autistic characters in this game -- River, the wife of main character John, and Isabelle, one of their friends. River and Isabelle remind me of me and my brother, respectively.

Like Isabelle, my brother has learned to mask his autism, wearing a neurotypical face that is never truly what he actually is, but which helps him get by in a society that doesn't always understand that being different is okay. And it exhausts him. Profoundly.

Video Game: Crusader Kings II: Conclave
Lords of the Realm
Submitted by Rindis:
Paradox took a while while to announce the another CK II expansion after Horse Lords, but when they did, it turned out to be focused largely on the inner workings of the realm (while most expansions had been focused on expanding the scope of the game), and hoped to increase mid- to late-game challenge.

Conclave came out on January 1, 2016, alongside patch 2.5, which featured the same ability to log into your Paradox account from the launcher that had recently been introduced to EU IV.

Browsing Games - ...the joy of pilgrimage...
Posted by ZombieBoard:
Wanting for something more than just shooting at tanks in Battlezone, tonight I whipped up my dormant Steam account to see what else I could play.

My friends and gaming brothers have tried to rally me in the past to the Epic/Gog game stores whenever some hot classic game specimen is offered free of charge for a limited time. Like Gloomhaven a few weeks ago or some Star Wars mega bundle months before. I always decline because what my friends fail to realize is that the limited time isn't bound to the offer, but it's actually chained to my friends. On every one of us, for that matter. For us human westerners, time is the most limited resource, along with energy, attention span, and decision fatigue. Not games. Never games.

Games are endless.

Solitary Soundings - Steering Clear of Frustration and Time Sinks
Posted by Patrick Carroll:
The more games I play, the more I appreciate time-honored classic games.

It's not just that they're venerable; it's also that they're relatively small and short. They last long enough to be interesting and satisfying, but they don't overstay their welcome. Thus they fit neatly into a typical person's daily life.

Of course, I'm not a typical person; I'm a gamer. So I've often spent entire weekends just playing games. And I regularly stay up much too late just to get in a few more turns.

But the question is, am I happy with that?

Franchise: Castlevania
Magpie Gamer - Castlevania Season 2
Posted by Forbidding:
Castlevania is an American animated television series based on the video game series of the same name. The second season wraps up what was originally planned as a three-part adaptation of the 1989 entry, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Alucard's backstory is drawn from the 1997 game, Symphony of the Night, and characters and elements borrowed from the 2005 game, Curse of Darkness, start appearing in this season. The series was originally planned as a direct-to-video movie back in 2007, but entered development hell until around 2015, when it was picked up by the streaming service Netflix. Over the years the script had morphed from a movie to a trilogy and a proposed live-action production.

Video Game: Treasure of Nadia
Sokoban With Benefits
Submitted by sbszine:
Treasure of Nadia is an epic 2D RPG with an Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider style 'treasure hunting' theme. It has all the usual trimmings: traps, snakes, golden idols, mysterious parchments, whip cracking, jokes, an evil criminal organisation, hints of the supernatural, and so forth. On top of that there are tons of minigames, puzzles, cutscenes, secrets, and collectibles, such that the whole thing takes a whopping 70 hours to play to 100% completion. One small thing that may be divisive is that it's highly pornographic. I mean, this thing is a nine gig install and probably eight and half of that is just prerendered sex scenes. Consider that your content warning and bail out of this review now if that's something you don't want to read about.

One Single Meeple - Going digital
Posted by Monica Elida Forssell:
I have spoken before about my digital experiences, whenever I can`t get myself to the table for a game. They are also nice, easy entertainment at my fingertips.

Let me take you on a little digital journey. My cousin, who also introduced me to MtG and board games, set up a Steam account in 2011. It took a bit of time before I put it to good use, though. All my life I had barely played any digital games, but I recalled Snake and Kalaha on my phone, and also a Settlers type game on those old computers, where the game came on a disc. I also had a nice time playing some robot game on my friend`s computer, but she hated that I was so into it. One very special little electronic game, that I still have, is a Mario Bros one, where they pick up boxes to get into a lorry. It`s from the 80s and as I write this I recall the sound of the game.

Still, digital games was not something I felt like getting into so much when I started off the board game life, so I just dabbled a little bit into it. There were some nice games that were free to play. Turns out one of them is one of my most played games today...

Over the years the script had morphed from a movie to a trilogy and a proposed live-action production. Netflix allowed the writers to keep the original 2007 script and the team worked closely with Konami, who helped to identify continuity issues. The show drew visual inspiration from Ayami Kojima's artwork, particularly Symphony of the Night, and used a production staff consisting of members with experience in the Japanese animation industry.

Happy Spooky time of year! Of course there will be videos to go along with the scary theme of October, in fact, I got two for you! Starting off with the MASSIVE world of video games, I got a lit of the ones that make me question those bumps in the night...

What are some of your favorite horror video games? I'd love to hear all about them in the comment section, keeping the discussion going all the way to our graves. Video Game: Seal Team
My First Video Game Purchase Revisited
Submitted by octorfunk:
I purchased Seal Team in the early 90s from the local electronics store. I'm not sure of the year, but it had to have been close to 1996, because I remember seeing the Nintendo 64 on shelves for the first time, as well as a Virtual Boy to demo. At the time, our home didn't have a console, so I was much more focused on the PC games. Being a 10-12yr old kid fascinated by all things military, Seal Team jumped right off the shelf and had my attention. My mother was worried about the violence (ha!), but finally relented.

When I got it running in DOS, I wasn't super impressed honestly. As a 11-13yr old, the controls were clunky, missions were difficult, and it was surprisingly not very focused on shooting for a shooting game. I definitely played it a fair amount, but moved on to other games in time.

Video Game: Ori and the Will of the Wisps
A beautiful atmospheric 2D "Metroidvania"
Submitted by Aarontu:
I really enjoyed Ori and the Blind Forest when I played through it several years ago. I really enjoyed this sequel, too, though there are a surprising amount of changes or additions in the mechanics between the two games. Ori and the Blind Forest was a Metroidvania that focused on platforming and escape sequences and fluid movement, Ori and the Will of the Wisps has NPCs, shops, and much more fleshed out combat and boss fights, in addition to all the great stuff from the original game. The game feels a bit linear at the very start, but eventually opens up with 4-ish independent areas with a boss in each to defeat, before you take on the final area, where you have to defeat the source of the infectious decay affecting the area. Having played Hollow Knight before Ori and the Will of the Wisps, it was hard not to make comparisons between the two, not just because of a number of game mechanics that they both use, but some very similar story aspects.

First Four Levels
Submitted by GeoffreyB:
One the first level when the castle is attacked. I used Garrett and his troops to attack the mermen as well as the soldiers one Garrett's side of the castle. After killing three enemy units of mermen Garrett and Baldarov along with Tiberon brook through the side of the castle. Tiberon then along with Calais end up losing to the Arch Priest. I hung around the level long for the King to kill most of the enemies left but as usual ends up succumbing to the enemies. After the KIng died I safely exited the map.

One the second level, being a veteran player of the game, I only assigned 4 horsemen to Baldarov and made Garrett do most of the killing. I defeated two full units without using Baldarov. Mina the citizens whom Garrett was charged with protecting all died as usual except Mina. Baldarov ended up killing one of the Thieves units but only one. I wanted Garrett to get as much experience as possible knowing that Baldarov died in a couple of levels. The Thieves came close to winning until Mina healed Garrett allowing him to stay strong enough to kill the last of the Thieves.

Video Game: Tomb Raider (1996)
Random Thoughts on Gaming - My Gaming History
Posted by hieronymus71:
When we were in the relationship for about two or three years, on a whim my mother-in-law bought a PlayStation for us after I'd expressed interest in it. The game series that most impressed me then was Tomb Raider (1996). I played every one of them that came out on the PlayStation, no other game really impressed me. Near the end of our relationship, I got a GameCube. I played one of my all-time favorite games: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Admittedly not much more than a Tomb Raider clone, it was extremely well-done and the saving and restarting aspect was made an integral part of the game, which I thought was absolutely awesome. I also played quite a bit of Mario Party with my son.

Video Game: Shin Megami Tensei V
Everything that sucks! - Let off some Steam, Bennett!
Posted by Harblnger:
Let's get started with the game that I was already playing at the start of the year and only finished in early June: Shin Megami Tensei V. The fifth entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series. If you tilt your head like this and squint really hard. Depending on how you count, there's a case to be made that this is actually already the twelfth main-line entry in the franchise, but that doesn't really matter, does it? No, what matters is whether it's any good. And yes, it's pretty good if you asked me. Not the best in the series, while it is definitely more rough around the edges from today's point of view, I think I still like Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne best. But I did have quite a bit of fun with Shin Megami Tensei V. Gameplay is great. The turn-press-system has been fine-tuned even more, leading to new possibilities on how to exploit it to your heart's content, there's more stuff to fiddle around with in between general levelups and cool boons that you can buy with glory points, there's a ton of cool demons, both old and new, and the more open nature of the game world increases the exploration-aspect of the whole thing. So what did irk me? Well, the story is pretty much the same as in every game in the series that came before.

Random Ruminations - Still a Wargamer at Heart
Posted by Patrick Carroll:
I got lured into video games just because electronic devices became so affordable and commonplace. Around 1990 I was quite happy with board games, and especially with board wargames. And I figured I'd be playing those all my life.

Some games, though, had an awful lot of rules to keep track of. A good example is one of my then favorites, Advanced Squad Leader. Other games took a lot of time to set up and take down, and a lot of table space as well. An example of that, from my old collection, is The Longest Day. Much as I liked wargames, I was growing weary of very big or complicated games. And PC gaming did a lot to solve that problem. Digital games take up no space, and they're instantaneous to set up or take down. They also keep track of and enforce the rules.

Video Game: Dragon Quest XI
Déjà Vu
Submitted by Forbidding:
The narrative is presented in a three arc format that is easy to follow, with the first half following a pretty standard routine of visiting X town and completing a sub-story there. It's not particularly exciting and usually involves something along the lines of running a horse race, fighting in an arena, or solving a local disappearance before moving on to the next town. The second arc starts off with a mini solo-adventure for each of the companions and then a trip back to every location you've previously visited to fight an additional boss. You'll also have to collect the same six orbs twice - once in the first half and again in the second. After the credits roll there is a third story arc with 20+ hours worth of post-game content. In the third act you travel back in time to alter the events of the second act and get the true ending.

Video Game: Elden Ring
Everything that sucks! - On my way to becoming the Lord of the Ring...
Posted by Harblnger:
No nuptial news, I'm afraid. I've just started to play Elden Ring on my shiny new Steam Deck a couple of days ago and that shit ain't subtle when it comes to linguistic allusions to Papa Tolkien's magnum opus. For now.

I've been meaning to write a Steam-Deck-heavy video-game-related "Content catchup" for a while now and I'll probably do that at some point, because I already got some mileage out of that thing that I've only been owning for three months and a couple of days at this point in time. Yes, I've already completed three games on it, although two of them were relatively short. But now I've decided to invest my time in something a bit more massive again, taking a stab at From Software's latest (and apparently best, according to a bunch of opinions online and the average rating here on the Geek) game, Elden Ring, because if I own a Steam Deck now, I should probably play something worthwhile on it, right?

M1 Macs seem to have a problem with slow write speeds to many brands of NVMe SSDs, and there are some they won't write to at all. Here's a list from various sources & personal experience. Note that M1 Studio seems to need a Thunderbolt display to get the best speeds out of external SSD enclosures (otherwise the Studio reserves some bandwidth for running a TB display, even if you have an HDMI display working happily).

Video Game: Slay the Spire
Amazing free DLC that more than doubles the content from Slay the Spire! A review for the Downfall mod.
Submitted by nerman8r:
Downfall was already the best content mod for Slay the Spire, and Hermit was the second best. Now you can play them both without learning how to use mods! Downfall adds eight (!) new characters that are fun and balanced, and a new game mode where everything is turned upside down. Every event from the original game is re-framed from the baddies' point of view and it's hilarious.

One of my favourite characters is Snecko, whose themes are chaos and using cards from other characters' pools (you choose three characters at the start of a run.) Automaton lets you build "function" cards that combine three other cards. The Gremlins have you playing with the five little ones (and sometimes Nob) with their own special abilities and synergies, and switching between them to your advantage. Hermit plays around with Srikes, Defends and Curses, if you ever wanted to make a good deck full of garbage, he's got you covered! (If anyone wants descriptions of the other classes, let me know!)

Video Game: Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward
Reinvigorating the Final Fantasy series and raising the bar for MMOs
Submitted by ghostpants:
With only a couple of exceptions, Final Fantasy XIV is the only video game I’ve played this year. If you had told me that by July, 99% of my gaming time had been spent with one game, I’d scoff at the suggestion. I’ve always been a gamer that enjoys variety. Sometimes to the point where I will avoid longer games in order to play various shorter titles. And to be sure, there are a number of games I do hope to play this year. But something about FF14 has captured and maintained my interest unlike any game ever has, frankly. Most surprisingly, playing the game has yet to feel like an obligation, which for many people is a major downside to playing MMOs. Considering what I know about my own tastes and habits, my experience of the game has been the exact opposite of how, on paper, it should have played out. I certainly shouldn’t have played in excess of 400 hours or spent so much time developing a thorough understanding of fights, roles, and rotations. This is the kind of game that I want to like but ultimately put down well before it hits its stride. It absolutely shouldn’t be forcing me to reconsider my longstanding top-10 games of all time list. And yet, here I am, seven months into 2022, and FF14 has not only provided a ton of interesting and engaging content to explore and restored my hope for the long running franchise, but it has exclusively fulfilled my gaming needs unlike any game I’ve ever played.

Video Game: Mario Strikers: Battle League
I Waited 15 Years for This?
Submitted by MeepleandtheMoose:
I am so disappointed by Mario Strikers: Battle League. I’m so thankful that I borrowed this from the library and didn’t actually spend any of my hard-earned money on this game.

This game starts with such promise. The training mode shows all kinds of cool skills that could theoretically raise the skill ceiling and make this such a great experience. There’s a limited number of characters in the game, but the gear they include allow you to tweak their stats to tailor to your game play style. The stat changes provided by gear are net-zero though, every point added to a stat takes away an equal number of points from another stat, so there isn't a good reason to dive into it unless you specifically want to make a character overpowered in a single stat at the cost of all the others. It’s not an interesting, exciting, or engaging aspect of the game.

Browsing Games - ...a simpler quest for vintage space rocks...
Posted by ZombieBoard:
I still think The Quest for the Greatest is a great way to experience the evolution of video game history by playing the best of the best. The problem with it, other than the available time to actually play them, is that my initial self-imposed quest rules were too ambitious. And I'll not even tell you some of the more flamboyant ideas I had to share this journey with you.

So I'm changing the rules.

One Single Meeple - When tabletop is not the option
Posted by Elida:
As I have spoken of previously, I have a chronic affliction that may affect me quite badly physically. That means that when I am at home I am not always up for a tabletop game. It may even go days without me playing games at the table. Some of my difficulties is sitting over time, especially when I have my bad days, focus, the basic ability to keep track of what I am doing. And then there`s the energy.

Good thing there`s video games, too! Years ago I had a cousin of mine install Steam on my computer. He did it in the hopes I would go deep into video game country. It took me years to even get there. But now I am finally sitting pretty on a collection of almost 40 video games, and a fair few on my wishlist. They are nice for entertainment when I can`t seem to get to the table for a physical game.

Random Ruminations - Hardcore, Casual, or What?
Posted by Patrick Carroll:
This VGG thread about hardcore-versus-casual gaming got me thinking. Clearly those two terms are insufficient to describe the kinds of gamers that make up the gaming world.

So, off the top of my head, I'm starting to see four, or maybe eight, basic kinds of gamers.

Question 1 is, How much is your heart into gaming? That is, do you shrug it off as just an occasional pastime or amusement, or do you feel it's the most wonderful part of your life? Or are you somewhere in between? Which end of that spectrum do you gravitate toward?

Video Game: XCOM 2: War of the Chosen – Tactical Legacy Pack
"fan service" done right
Submitted by Aarontu:
The Tactical Legacy Pack is a piece of DLC for XCOM 2 that the game's lead designer (Jake Solomon) has described as a "gift for the fans" of the XCOM series. It requires the War of the Chosen expansion on top of the base XCOM 2 game, and also has only been released on PC. The new XCOMs love making callbacks and references to previous XCOM and X-COM games, and this DLC is no exception. It's a bit fan-servicey, but it also adds some genuinely great stuff to the game (in the opinion of this XCOM series fan, at least).

The Tactical Legacy Pack includes 4 mini campaigns in a game mode called "Legacy Ops", each with 7 set missions that you must complete with a set roster of soldiers (there is no strategy layer between missions in these mini campaigns). They are supposed to tell the story of how Bradford helped get XCOM back together after the aliens took over. It features a number of maps from XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Within, and taped up and battered versions of the weapons and armor from XCOM: Enemy Unknown. You have to play the campaigns with "Ironman" mode enabled, but there are pretty much no mission timers, and the music is a mix of XCOM 2 and selected tracks from XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Within, so the gameplay feels pretty reminiscent of the previous XCOM, but with enemies and extra powerups from XCOM 2.

Solitary Soundings - Outgrowing Games
Posted by Patrick Carroll:
I guess I've gone through countless changes during my life. And yet I have what another VGGeek calls a present bias--an irrational sense that the way I am is the way I've always been and always will be. So, when I think about gaming, I expect to continue enjoying the games I've had fun with all my life. When I look closer, though, I find that's not the case.

I'm not up for cataloguing all the changes in my gaming preferences and habits, but one in particular stands out for me today: I seem to have developed a (probably permanent) distaste for heavy (complex) games.

I enjoyed both light and heavy games in my youth, but in my twenties and thirties, I could delve deeply into an extremely hard-to-learn game and happily lose myself in it for months or years. I've mentioned my fifteen-year affair with ASL many times, but there were a number of other such prolonged infatuations as well. Usually, in each of those cases, I thought I was embarking on a lifelong project that would grow ever more complex and thus more and more satisfying.

Rules of Play - This one's also for Karl
Posted by pusherman42:
I thought a lot about Deep Rock Galactic's mechanics and design while writing my last post, but a few random thoughts didn't fit well into the theme of camaraderie. So here's a bunch of little things.

1) Beer is fun, but worthless

I wrote about how much I like the beer system in DRG in my last post: it's thematically appropriate and helps strengthen player bonds. And players are incentivized to engage with it because it (ostensibly) gives buffs.

But the whole system needs some rebalancing.

First, the buffs range from completely useless to unnecessary nice-to-haves. None of them are going to hugely make or break your session. You'll get more gold one mission. Or have a little more health. Maybe you carry things a little faster.

Franchise: Dragon Age
Magpie Gamer - Dawn of the Seeker
Posted by Forbidding:
Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker, or "Dragon Age: Crusade of the Blood Mage" in some regions, is a 2012 Japanese animated film based on the video game series Dragon Age. It was co-produced by BioWare (game developer), EA (game publisher) and anime distribution company Funimation Entertainment. The film explores the backstory of Cassandra Pentaghast, a major character in the Dragon Age universe, and how she became known as the Right Hand of the Divine.
