Alfonzo Dennard Released by Patriots: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Just three years after selecting him in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL draft, the New England Patriots released cornerback Alfonzo Dennard, the team announced:

It didn't take long for him to find a new team, however, as ESPN's Field Yates reported the Arizona Cardinals claimed him off waivers on Wednesday.

The NFL Network's Ian Rapoport was the first to report New England's intent to part ways with the former University of Nebraska star Tuesday:

Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal reported that the Patriots saved $1 million of Dennard's $1.5 million salary by releasing him before June 1.

The 25-year-old defensive back was limited to just six games in 2014 due to a hamstring injury, but he played in a total of 23 games in his first two seasons with the Pats, including 16 starts. Daniels noted that Dennard's playing time took a significant hit last season:

Dennard wasn't a star with the Patriots by any means, but he did manage five interceptions in three campaigns, and he certainly outperformed his draft status. 

This move comes as somewhat of a surprise since New England lost both Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner in free agency. That leaves Logan Ryan, Kyle Arrington and Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler as the primary corners on the roster.

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reported on some of the possible reasons behind his lack of playing time and eventual release:

While the Patriots decided that it was time to move on, Dennard didn't even have a chance to hit the open market. With teams constantly on the lookout for quality cornerbacks, the Cardinals took a flier on him.

Even if he doesn't ascend back to starting status with Arizona, Dennard is the type of player who will provide depth and brings a winning track record to the table as well.
