Conchar

Perched on a hill above the rio Durcal, Conchar in the municipality of Villamena, sits just to the north east of El Valle and Lecrin on a loop road between the motorway junction at Cozvijar and Albuñuelas.

While it feels quite remote in terms, situated in the middle of beautiful countryside, Conchar is actually only 7 mins drive to the main motorway connecting Granada to Motril – both being reached within 30 mins, the larger town of Durcal with all its amenities and a couple of large supermarkets is just 10 minutes drive.

This pretty little village is surrounded by dramatic scenery, the barranco of the rio Durcal and local vineyards and attracts many visitors, especially walkers and cyclists.

The village has a lovely old church, the Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro (17th century), an old watch tower, the Atalaya de CĂłnchar. Being a wine area, water is very important and there is an impressive irrigation system – the Acequia de los Arcos and the remains of a medieval aqueduct.

A nice walk out of the village, through lovely countryside, leads you to a fabulous waterfall along the river – the Arroyo Alcázar and some ancient thermal baths, the Baños de Urquizas.

A small village with a very strong sense of community, Conchar is divided by the river into two barrios, with around 200 inhabitants in total and a couple of bars, hotel/holiday rentals, fantastic pasticeria selling amazing sweet pastries and a tapas restaurant.

While Conchar is very quiet and sleepy most of the time, it comes alive for fiestas several times throughout the year, especially for the “Fiesta del Mosto” in early January, when the village comes alive with its own wine festival. Being in a wine growing area, and next to the famous Hacienda Señorio de Nevada, wine is very important to Conchar!

The village has two further fiesta weekends when they celebrate the pilgrimage of Santiago ApĂłstol and their official fiesta of San Roque around the August 16.

If you’re looking for a picturesque and authentic village in beautiful countryside, with fabulous views and a great community and a penchant for vino, look no further than Conchar!
