about

Two years ago, I was invited by dancer and choreographer Paco Ziel to collaborate in the creation of a multidisciplinary piece titled “Flesh and Sound”, which is strongly inspired in pre-hispanic music and dance. The creation process of this work put me in contact with ethnomusicologists and anthropologists who shared with me their resources such as books, Mesoamerican codex, and sound recordings of reference regarding pre-hispanic culture. The result of this was an inner artistic revelation that made me want to study and research nonstop about this topic with special focus towards music. Even though I grew up surrounded by pre-hispanic art and music it never got to smitten me like it does today. I realized that ancestral pre-hispanic instruments are able to express feelings and trigger memories that conventional instruments are unable to. Moreover, I realized their combination with modern instruments and sounds of nature could result in textures and narratives that otherwise wouldn’t be possible to create. Pre-hispanic art decentralized my way of listening and feeling sound and movement to the point of making me step away from the usual occidental ways of analyzing, feeling and perceiving sound. It reformatted my sensibility and how I value what is artistically
worthy or not. Out of this experience came the unstoppable desire to share all of this with the community. The result was the creation of this album that blends pre-hispanic instruments (ayacaztli, huilacapiztli, quadruple flute, ayoyotes, etc), acoustic modern instruments, synthesizers, vocals and sounds of nature.

I want to deeply thank Vias Dance Company, Paco Ziel and Diana Leon for their continuous support along my artistic journey.

I want to also thank all the Mexican artisans that created all the pre-hispanic instruments used in this album such as Gilberto Chávez Espinosa who made the quadruple flute and other beautiful huilacapiztlis and tlapitzallis present throughout the album.

I dedicate this album to my family and my ancestors.
