” 1913, Silver Gelatin Print. Italian Futurism Photography.

Anton Giulio Bragaglia’s photo-work showed similarity to earlier photographer such as Eadweard Muybridge, where he took photos to capture movements. Unlike Muybridge, Bragagalia took the concept of Futurism in celebrating speed, time, technology etc. and unified it with art. “The Smoker, The Match, The Cigarette” was an attempt to capture the fluid and continuous dynamic flow of movement. Bragaglia named these photographs as “Fotodinamisomo” (photodynamism), literally meant moving photographs. He described his direction of motion as that
which exerts a facination over our senses, the lyrical expression of life, the lively invoke of the magnificent, the dynamic feeling with which the universe incessantly vibrates.” (Futurist Manifesto)
Bragaglia’s futuristic photograph was a celebration in all men-technology. The camera was invented by men, and it was this idea of capturing time and speed on to his art.

In this photography, his intention was to create a sensation of dynamism on a still image. It was identify as images of interior essence and as pure movement. These images were neither beginning or ending, a continuation of moving actions that was created by light. The image almost seem to be a replay of a scene, you can’t see it moving, but you can feel it. It was a successful sensation that Bragaglia intended to express.
