The château La Coste Winery is located 15 kilometers north of the old town area of Aix-en-Provence in southern France. The project included the restructuring of the complex to transform it into a garden museum dotted with outdoor sculptures and pavilions, some of them designed by other architects and artists. While Jean Nouvel’s factory and Frank Gehry’s outdoor theater were built around the existing villa, the works of Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois, Sean Scully, and Hiroshi Sugi were placed within the surrounding landscape. In addition to planning the overall masterplan and its central facility, the Art Center, another two constructions were designed: the Chapel, which involved recovering the ruins of an existing Roman church; and the Four Glass Cubes Pavilion, which houses an installation piece by Ando himself. The Art Center welcomes visitors as a gateway. It contains an information center, gallery, and cafeteria. The outdoor space is characterized by its 140-meter-long, 4,000-square meter water garden that serves as both a scenic solution to the demand for 100 parking spaces and as a keystone for the landscape of the site as a whole...[+]
