The fundamental question concerning the future of psychiatry is not a discussion I wish to watch from the sidelines. I am interested in being an active participant in the evolution and the continued progression of the field of medicine and particularly psychiatry. My name is Alicia A. Barnes DO MPH. I am a Third Year Psychiatry Resident at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ and a Second Year APA Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) Fellow.
I have an extensive history with the APA, which started during my second year of medical school when I was awarded the APA Summer Mentor Fellowship. This gave me a clinical foundation in psychiatry before my third year of medical school. I was the Vice President of the resident chapter of the New Jersey Psychiatric Association (NJPA), where I served as a liaison between the general body and my residency program. Currently I serve as the Minority Fellow Representative to the APA Assembly and I am a member of the APA Medical Education Council. In this role I have been actively involved, attending Area 3 regional conferences and the National Assembly meetings. Becoming the Resident-Fellow Member Trustee Elect (RFMTE) will allow me to utilize the tools I have developed at the local and national level.
Having been involved with the APA for such a long time as well as having a background in Public Health I bring a unique perspective to the position. I have noticed that there is a lack of communication between the APA and members and non-members. This affects the APAs membership as well as donor base. I have developed strong communication and interpersonal skills that will allow me to create an open environment with fellow residents in order to increase awareness and involvement. My collaborative style will advance the initiatives of the APA and give me the platform to promote the furtherance of leadership opportunities within the APA through engagement and advocacy among residents.
As residents we often fail to grasp the impact that the APA has on us as the face of American Psychiatry. It feel it is important to communicate the benefits of being APA members but also that the APA functions as the advocate for the rights and privileges of all psychiatrists to the wider resident-fellow member body. I would like to work on the website with APA staff members, collaborate with the Medical Education Council to reach out to Chief Residents, as well as, make myself available through social events at conferences to residents and medical students, in order to advance the benefits of being an APA member as well as increase the awareness of the function of the APA.
If given the position I look forward to continuing to working with other residents and members of the Board of Trustees as we look to decrease stigma, increase awareness, and implement a responsible model for the future of our psychiatric practices. Thank you for your consideration.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any comments, questions or just to say hello. I hope I have the honor to represent your voice at the APA to the Board of Trustees. My Email is [email protected]
