Destination: Islands of Hawaii

Hawaii. The destination that is usually on every Bucket List around. The land of hula dancing, shaved ice, black sand beaches, the famous North Shore waves and sweeping beachside mountain views. Lush rainforests, towering waterfalls and stunning scenery for days, it is the destination of many dreams come true. There is no mistaking it’s appeal. It is truly paradise and offers so much more than just a beachside vacay experience.

So first, let’s talk about the Hawaiian landscape. As you can see, Hawaii isn’t just one Island, but a grouping of six Islands off the West coast of the United States. About a 6 hour flight from Seattle, the Islands are surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.

Depending on WHAT you want from your Hawaii location, will determine which Island(s) is right for you! Here is an overview of what each island boasts:

Rainbow Falls - Island of Hawaii
Rainbow Falls – Island of Hawaii

Island of Hawaii

Also known as the Big Island for good reason as it is larger than all of the other Hawaiian islands combined, is famous for being home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Kilauea has been erupting continuously since 1983 and is a very accessible tourist destination. The visitor center is open daily and the 10 plus mile Crater Rim Drive lets virtually anyone experience the drama and sheer primal force of an active volcano.

This is the island that boasts the Black Sand Beaches and even snow-covered mountaintops. Yep, you can snowboard in Hawaii during certain times of the year. I promised you it was so much more than just a beach vacation!

Maui Beach - Hawaii
Maui Beach – Hawaii

Maui

Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian islands and is often rated as having the best beaches in the world. Additionally, every winter humpback whales migrate to mate or give birth in the warm waters and whale watch opportunities abound. Seeing a sunrise or sunset on Haleakala should be on every tourist’s agenda but be sure to dress warmly – it’s often below freezing at the summit once the sun goes down.

Molokini - Maui, Hawaii

Maui has incredible snorkeling. I highly recommend a Molokini Crater Snorkeling tour (photo above). If you are a Hawaii Five-O fan, this landmark was featured a few episodes back when Steve went on his first date after his break-up with Catherine. It is a volcanic atoll that boasts some seriously fantastic fish.

Kaunolu Lighthouse - Lanai, Hawaii
Kaunolu Lighthouse – Lanai, Hawaii

Lanai

The smallest inhabited island in Hawaii, Lanai offers big enticements to its visitors. From the stunning views atop the pine-lined Munro Trail to watching the acrobatic spinner dolphins from romantic Hulopoe Bay, Lanai is a special place where you’re sure to find serenity, adventure, and intimacy. If you want to get away from it all, get away to Lanai.

Kaunakakai - Molokai, Hawaii
Kaunakakai – Molokai, Hawaii

Molokai

If you’re looking for breathtaking natural beauty, rainforests or deserted beaches, this is it.

This is often called the REAL Hawaii. The untouched Island. The truest to the spirit of Hawaiian culture. And it smells divine from the pineapple plantations/farms!

Leahi (aka Diamond Head) - Oahu, Hawaii
Leahi (aka Diamond Head) – Oahu, Hawaii

Oahu

Oahu is the busiest of the islands with the majority of the Hawaii’s population calling this island home. The state capital, Honolulu, is on this island as are several iconic landmarks such as Pearl Harbor and Waikiki Beach. This is also home to the iconic North Shore and a big destination for amateur and pro surfers alike.

Kauai, Hawaii
Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai

The oldest of the Hawaiian islands, is perhaps the epitome of serenity. Kauai is a laid-back isle with a more rustic feel to it. Certain areas boast of no cell or wi-fi coverage. Home to dramatic natural beauty such as the Waimea Canyon, known as the Grand Canyon of the West, and the majestic cliffs of the Napali Coast, Kauai appeals to rugged outdoor enthusiasts.

Glass Beach - Kauai, Hawaii
Glass Beach – Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai is also home to Glass Beach. Which, I have to tell you, is a truly unique gem that isn’t talked about often. This isn’t a place to go for lounging while soaking up the sun, but a beach for “beach combing.” The shoreline of Glass Beach is covered with countless brown, aqua, clear and blue sea glass pebbles.

Airplane in Sky

So, now you have an idea of where to visit (YAY). How do you get there?
You have a few commercial airport options:

  • Kona International Airport (KOA) in Kona
  • Hilo International Airport (ITO) in Hilo
  • Honolulu International Airport (HNL)
  • Kahului Airport (OGG)
  • Molokai Airport (MKK)
  • Lihue Airport (LIH)
  • Lanai Airport (LNY)

Once you fly into a major airport, taking a helicopter or island hopper flight is the best mode of transport from one island to another.

If you are interested in exploring multiple islands or destinations, I recommend at least 10 days. The time investment for island hopping can easily take 1/2 a day, so best to give yourself enough time to make the trek and still enjoy the process!

Now, you’ve made up your mind. YOU are going to plan a Hawaiian vacation Woohoo! There are at least 3 things that you MUST do when visiting these islands.

  • Attend a Luau
  • Go on a Helicopter Tour
  • Rent a car so you can truly explore & experience the wonder of the islands

I can’t wait to help you plan this vacation. It is going to be FANTASTIC! I’m not sure who is more excited — me or you! Either way, let’s make it happen. It will be the trip of a lifetime!

May I just say what a comfort to uncover somebody who really understands what they are discussing on the web. You definitely realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people have to look at this and understand this side of the story. I was surprised that you aren’t more popular given that you certainly have the gift.

Its like you read my thoughts! You seem to know a lot approximately this, such as you wrote the e-book in it or something. I feel that you can do with a few p.c. to power the message house a bit, however other than that, that is excellent blog. An excellent read. I will certainly be back.
