Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development—Kerner Swing Bridge (Acrow Bridge)

Louisiana DOTD reconnected communities separated during a natural disaster with its Kerner Swing Bridge project. During Hurricane Ida, the Kerner Bridge over Bayou Barataria was damaged due to a vessel collision that occurred when barges broke loose, causing significant damage to the main truss and approach spans. The Kerner Bridge was the only access between the Town of Lafitte and the Island of Barataria. The Louisiana National Guard built an emergency temporary single lane floating bridge to allow access across the bayou, which made recovery and response efforts very lengthy. The installation of the $4 million Acrow Bridge allowed DOTD to restore normal vehicular traffic, which allowed for more efficient post-hurricane recovery and response efforts for the local communities.
