Emergency Medical Services for Events of All Sizes

Count on ALTOR’s Multi-Faceted Approach to Keep Your Attendees Safe

We offer On-Site Professional Medics

At ALTOR Emergency Medical Services, we understand that each event is unique, and we accommodate this variety with a threefold strategy. First, guided by the South African National Standard (SANS) matrix and the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act, we ensure the correct medical deployment for each event by doing a thorough risk analysis. Second, we employ a practical approach where ALTOR’s owners and managers (who often form part of the on-site team) provide essential insights to each event that competitors cannot match. Third, our extensive network of medical, business and health and safety professionals equip us to tailor an approach that fulfils all client needs including key deliverables and budget, while mitigating the risk carried by the client.

Why Altor EMS?

Our team understands that events require specialized medical services, and that is why we focus exclusively on the event medical space. As owner-managed specialists, our owners are hands-on and actively involved in every aspect of our business. This means that we are able to provide a level of personal attention and care that other more corporate competitors simply cannot match. We are not just a company – we are a team of dedicated experts who are passionate about keeping your event safe.

Did You Know?

Co-ordinated medical risk management is a legal requirement for all public events, BUT different events have varied medical and safety requirements.

Medical and safety criteria are determined by the size and nature of the event, and it is important to note that not all medics have the same level of training and treatment capabilities.

The Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA) prescribe specific guidelines for the scope of practice at each level.

There can be significant ethical and legal implications for medical personnel when medics are found to be practicing outside their scope.

ALTOR EMS are the Leading Event Medical Service

Many clients and event organizers are unaware that not all medical staff (or medics) are equal, but instead vary greatly in both level of training and capabilities. The Health Professionals Council of South Africa sets out guidelines as to the skills and competencies performed by each level of medic. There may be significant ethical and legal implications if a medic is found to be practicing outside their scope.

The below is a brief description of each level of medic, hopefully this will assist you as the client to make an informed decision.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

As set out by the HPCSA, BLS falls into the category of supervised practice and would need supervision from an Intermediate or Advanced Life Support medic. BLS can be used as support staff to compliment ILS / ALS medics. Note: BLS medics scope of practice is very limited as to what can be done in the event of an emergency.

Intermediate Life Support (ILS)

Recognized as an Independent Practitioner, ILS medics are able to work on their own within their scope of practice. Note: The scope of practice for an ILS is more advanced than that of a BLS. Their skills include, but are not limited to, ECG / Defibrillation, Intravenous Therapy, certain medications.

Advanced Life Support (ALS)

Also known as a Paramedic, they are independent practitioners and will assist any crew member that has a priority patient that requires advanced intervention. Their skills range from Advanced Airway Management, a number of life saving medications, as well as Advanced ECG monitoring and Cardioversion.
