The Black Mission Family of Figs

Black Mission is a classic variety, very suitable for commercial production.

Named after the Black Mission fig variety, it is a dark purple to black fig, with an amber to pink/red (especially when caprified) flesh. It has become a classic fig variety, well-established as a very productive commercial fig in California. Though not the most flavorful of varieties, its thick skin allows it to hold up well to transport. And its small to tight ostiole makes it more resistant to spoilage. It is good either fresh or dried. Flavor can run from sweet and figgy, to having some berry tones, especially when caprified. Produces a breba crop. The varieties from this fig family share these characteristics.
