Dear All,

 

Please help me in PMI testing for material ASTM A36 thickness over 20.0mm, the composition requirement of manganese is (0.8 – 1.2)%. But result of test is less than 0.8%. Other testings are accepted (tensile, bending, elongation).

 

Please advice me this result is accepted or not.

 

If not, please advice the solution.

Hello Tran!

 

You did not mention the value that you are getting but only indicated that it is lesser than the lower limit. If all other tests are OK, then you need to discuss the matter with your customer for a concession so that it will be accepted.

Dear Mr. Tran,

You can go for spectrometer analysis of chemical composition. That is the best method to determine % of elements. PMI test is mainly for identification of materials, it wont show exact values at any point of time.

In the case of  30 mm plate, the carbon is marginally less and you can negotiate with your customer. In case of any other enquiry, visit http://blog.weldwell.com for free advice.

Tran,

 

Thanks for the details. Manganese is really OUT for both thicknesses. The other elements are generally acceptable as per ASTM A 36 assuming there is no minimum value of 0.20% specified for Copper.

 

You need the Heat Analyses Mill certificates of those plates from your steel suppliers or the PMI readings to comply with ASTM A 36. Otherwise, you really need the concession for acceptance.

Also the exact Mn content value u can cross check with wet analysis.

     PMI values are not exact value, so the below value of Mn is not a major problem. If you want confirm the correct value, select the wet analaysis method.

Well, it is not all that simple a metallurgy. Mn can take care of C but I doubt how much same can be said about C...

For C & S, Nitrogen analysis - LECO instrument gives us the perfect results.
Rest elements can be rechecked by Wet Chemical Analysis if there is any dispute in spectrometer(VES)/ PMI analysis.

Wet chemical analysis is done by Titration for other elements and requires chips / drillings of the sample you want to analyse. Generally about 1-2 grams are required for each element to analyse.
You can get the details about the procedure from any Metallurgical / Chemical Laboratory in your vicinity / surrounding area or company..

Dear Tran,

As for your doubts for carbon steel plates A36,in my opinion,there is no big problem.A36 is just one kind common carbon structural steels.Sometimes,it is replace by steel grade ASTM A283Gr.C(this steel's Mn has no Min.limited,just as Max.0.90%) for many end users.

If you want to know more chemical composition and mechnical property for ASTM A283GrC steel,you also can find on http://www.xinsteel.com/astm-a283-a283m/a283-grade-c.html

So you had better talk with the engineers from your end customer for this point,hope they would accept.Good luck.
