The Ultimate Competition

Ty Buzz Kato

Pit-Fighter was released by Atari Games in 1990 and sold to arcades throughout the United States and Japan. The following information pertains to the actual game itself and for the actual arcade game specs and further info go
here.

General Synopsis

The game has three different characters of whom each of the players can be: Buzz, a "mulleted" ex-professional wrestler; Ty, a kick-boxing champion; or Kato, a third-degree black belt. Each player character has different fighting styles and techniques and they also each have their own Super Moves. The opponents are The Executioner, Southside Jim, C.C. Rider, Chainman Eddie, Angel, Mad Miles, Heavy Metal and The Masked Warrior. Although this synopsis is based off of the arcade version of Pit-Fighter, there are not too many distinct differences between the ports.

You must defeat all opponents in order to become the champion. The game has 15 different matches, some opponents like Southside Jim and Angel must each be faced twice in respective matches while other opponents are only faced once. Before you can make it to The Championship Match to face the reigning champion, The Masked Warrior, you must take on two Chainman Eddies. During all of these duels, a "Knife Man" or women may step out of the crowd, and attack you or any of the opponents. If only one player is in the game, there will only be one opponent at a time in most matches, but if two or three players are in, there will be two or three opponents at a time in each match.

Between every three matches, there is a Grudge Match where you will attempt to knock down your opponent three times without being knocked down three times yourself. If only one player is in the game, the opponent will be a computer-controlled clone of the character the player is controlling, but if two or three players are in the game, they will have to fight each other until the last of them remains standing. If the player wins the Grudge Match, a bonus is awarded. If not, no bonus.

In later matches, there are weapons and objects that can be used to fight against the opponents including knives, spiked balls, barrels, oil drums, crates, sticks, motorcycles, bar stools and so on. Those weapons and objects can also be used by the opponents, too. Also, on later stages, there are power pills that can temporarily make both the players and the opponents more powerful and more difficult to hurt.

If two or three players are in the game during the last match against the two Chainman Eddies before The Championship Match, they will have to fight each other until there is only one remaining that will proceed to The Championship Match. Once a player has made it to The Championship Match, the player must then face The Masked Warrior and then try to defeat him to win the championship. After his defeat, you are greeted by two scantily clad women with raining money everywhere (just like a rap video), and then the credits roll.

Overall, Pit-Fighter, for it's time, had breakthrew graphics, thanks to actors that were filmed in a studio and then digitized. Although, at times, it seems like this game is based upon just continuous, random, botton presses rather than any skill, it's still a hell of a good time! Musically, it is kind of irritating, but the sound effects and the hilarious taunts more than make up for it. In conclusion, it is simply just "slap-happy" fun that started a brand new generation in fighting games! This game can be best described as being able to play the movie, Lionheart, starring Jean Claude Van Damme, which is quite a compliment (to the movie of course). Kudos once again for Atari making yet another classic in the video game world!

Seen here, Pit-Fighter had a feature that is unique among fighters, even today. It has 3 sets of controllers to allow up to 3 people to play at once! 11 years later and still no one has done it! Pit-Fighter 2 will feature 4 controllers for up to 4 simultaneous players in tag team mode!

Good luck trying to find this gem in the arcades. However, many people still enjoy this classic on emulators such as MAME.

Unfortunately, none of the home ports did justice to the game. And many still remember the sour taste in their mouths after they rushed home to play it after purchasing it the day it was released. Hopefully PF2 will put a fresh taste back in our mouths :)
